Snow Days

Two weekends ago, Boston was hit by a blizzard.  It started snowing around 10am on Friday and the flakes continued to fall fast until Saturday morning.  When it was all over, we had about two feet of snow (friends and family in Buffalo were unimpressed, but this was a lot of snow for Boston, the most it has had in years).  Everything shut down in advance of the coming storm, which means we all got a snow day on Friday, and I was just as excited as I would have been in elementary school.  So was my sister E:

A driving ban was put in place, so once the snow stopped, we were free to walk the streets to survey the damage.  It was almost like stepping into another time...everything was so quiet and there were no cars whizzing by.  Some people took advantage of this to break out their skis:

The weekend turned out to be a great excuse to stay home, catch up on tv and sleep, and just take a break from busy schedules.  It was also the perfect opportunity for my sister and me to experiment with our alcohol supply and concoct tipsy milkshakes.

Our very unscientific recipe:  scoop several generous servings of vanilla ice cream into a blender.  Add crushed oreos (Double stuff.  Obviously.), peanut brittle ice cream topping, a large splash of Baileys, another of vodka, and a glug of milk.  Blend well and pour into glasses.  Top with chocolate sprinkles and more peanut brittle.

I'm happy to report that the experiment was quite successful.  If we hadn't used the last of our ice cream for the first round, we probably would have made three more.

Just the thing to take the chill off!

It's the Little Things...

Here are some things that I'm loving right now:

1.)  Perfect cold weather breakfast:  oatmeal with pecans and chocolate chips.

Some mornings just need to start with chocolate.
2.)  Silver Linings Playbook:  Finally saw this movie and absolutely loved it.  It made me laugh, it made me cry, it further solidified my girl crush on Jennifer Lawrence, and it rekindled my appreciation for Bradley Cooper, which I hadn't felt since Alias was on the air.  If you haven't seen it, GO DO IT NOW.

3.)  This Erdem dress on Gemma Arterton.  In theory, "floor-length floral" seems a little sister-wifey, but this is gorgeous.

4.) Fedoras:

Because what else do you don at an un-Superbowl party?  In which only the half-time show is viewed, followed by the terrible/awesome Lifetime movie Liz & Dick (there may have been a drinking game involved)?  Come to think of it, maybe we should have worn turbans....

The Beginning

Welcome to Kensington Gold!  I've been thinking about starting a blog for a while now, and it's finally time.  I hope to use this space to share the things that I enjoy with both old friends and new, and as a way to capture those fleeting moments and tiny pleasures that brighten my day (and that can hopefully brighten yours too).  As I get older, I feel that time only moves more quickly (and my memory only gets shoddier), so I want to write this blog as a way to document sources of inspiration as well as those moments both big and small that I know I'll want to look back on and smile.  Thanks for coming along for the ride.

Two of my favorite things:  Candlelight and Wine
